Soda, in moderation (let's say, a can per week) will certainly not hurt your diet.
Of course there are people who tell you NEVER drink soft drinks, neither regular nor diet. For the most part they are full of pretentious BS. It is not a health drink, in any case, but the occasional drink is no big deal.
The most important thing is, again, moderation. It is very easy to drink a lot of soft drinks, so that many added sugars are added to your diet.
Now, depending on your specific diet (and I'm thinking of the low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet that I am on), you would want to make those soft drinks very rare, because they will throw you out of ketosis.
Also keep in mind that one of the hardest things that have a diet is on the limitations. If a soft drink is enough to do every week, that's great.
As I said, people will tell you not to drink light sodas because they are "just as bad". Recent research has said that this is not true; artificial sweeteners do not tempt your body of brain to arrive. I have not had a "real" soft drink in months (but it's an I really have a drunkenness). (Dr. Pepper 10 is also a nice alternative to low calorie IMHO.)
