What is something nobody tells you about weight loss?

Well, in this day and age, the only things left unsaid are the things we don't yet know. It's not the unsaid that is the problem. It's all the misleading and downright false things that you stumble upon every day.

So, let's talk about the common misconceptions people still hold on to:
  1. If I exercise, I will lose fat. No, if you exercise, you will spend calories. If you spend more than you take in, only then you lose fat.

  2. Cardio is for fat loss, strenght training is for size. No, both cardio and strenght training burn calories. Resistance training is actually a great way to spend them. Cardio is for cardiovascular health, while resistance training is primarily for strenght and size. Both help fat loss.
  3. If I don't lose weight, I'm not losing fat. No, you might be gaining new muscle. Muscle is denser than fat. If your weight doesn't change, you might be losing fat, but you don't see it in the scale because of added muscle. This is also the reason home scales and BMI are often unreliable and misleading.
  4. I can't gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. Not true. You need a caloric deficit to lose fat, but you don't have to be in a surplus to gain muscle. You need positive nitrogen balance, though, which is regulated by nutritional choices.
  5. If I train a body part, I'll lose fat on that body part. No. This is called spot reduction and is a lie. If you train your abs, you'll gain ab muscles, but won't lose belly fat. You can only lose overall body fat (all or none) by being in a caloric deficit.
  6. Magic pills, vibrating devices and electrical impulses. If a product promises quick fat loss, shortcuts and easy ways out - run in the opposite direction. There are no shortcuts, you need to do it yourself. By being consistent, persistent and aware of your choices and activities.
  7. Carbs and fat are evil. No, carbs and fat are essential for your body to function properly. You just need good, healthy carbs and fat. No processed sugar (candy, soda, white sugar) or junk food, though. Eat fruit, vegetables, nuts, olive oil, fish, dairy, meat, whole grains etc.
  8. If you eat healthy you'll lose fat. No, if you eat to much of the healthiest food on Earth, you'll still be in a caloric surplus, thus gaining fat.
  9. I need to exercise long to lose fat. No, ineffective exercises take long to matter. Effective exercises can yield results in anywhere between 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the exercise type and intensity you do it at.
These come to mind now, but I'm sure there are more which I forgot. If I remember something, I'll add it.
Hope these help.
