How many calories do you need?

Through body scans or online calculators you can get an average number, but Sanford Fieldhouse takes an extra step.


"I used that fitness tracker My Fitness Pal and I've tried it, I'm growing more and more, but I want to arrive sooner," Joel Santos said.



Santos used gives him an estimate of the amount of calories he has to consume per day, taking into account his current training routine. Although he has gained some weight, he hopes to get a more accurate number to help him achieve his goals faster.

"Even if it's a 70-calorie difference, if they just go into one of those fitness apps that tell them how many calories they need, 70 calories over that number is really a lot," Dietician Lizzie Kasparek said.

Kasparek says that the energy test for rest times is useful for people starting a new diet or training plan, as well as for athletes when it comes to determining your nutritional needs.

"It is actually the minimum amount of calories that you would need if you were in bed all day, and that is the resting number of calories that your body needs," Kasparek said.

Before the test, clients are asked to fast for 12 hours, avoid exercise for 24 hours and arrive relaxed. Then clients place a cap over their heads that holds the gases that are fed in and out to give an accurate reading.

"Based on their activity, I will adjust that number based on how much exercise they do, if they have an active job, they run a lot, all these things go to what that number should be," Kasparek said.

Customers who want to lose weight should not eat less than their REE, while those who want to gain weight should increase this number.

Kasparek says that if you eat too little, your body will retain fat and slow down the weight loss process.

"You are reading these magazines and they often say 'your flat stomach is 1200 calories' and yes, you may have a day when you feel good, but after a while you do not feel so well. more than 1200 needed, "said Kasparek.
