Weight loss: Why is it difficult to lose weight?

Have you noticed that sometimes there are two siblings, one of which is overweight and unable to lose weight and the other is thin and unable to arrive while the two consume the same food? The answer lies in the difference in metabolism. Many people have a slow metabolism and find it difficult to burn the calories they consume and therefore to gain weight easily.

Being overweight or obese is no longer considered a lifestyle problem, but is now classified and treated as a disease by the World Health Organization. Obesity is part of a spectrum of metabolic problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It also leads to multiple conditions such as the risk of heart attack, stroke, shortness of breath, joint pain, fatty liver, infertility, depression and multiple forms of cancer. Especially the quality of life suffers enormously. That is why it is very important to maintain a healthy weight and to know your weight loss options if you are obese.

Losing weight: what are the options?
There are various options for weight loss, including medical, endoscopic and surgical. However, any weight loss technique only works if you follow a healthy diet and routine after you have achieved your intended weight loss. Although a healthy diet is high in protein, low in carbohydrates and high in fiber, the minimum recommended workout to maintain your weight is at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise, five days a week.

Medical weight loss
The medical options begin by first ensuring that you do not have a treatable condition, such as hypothyroidism or any other hormonal condition that causes weight gain. There are medicines approved for weight loss that a doctor can prescribe. The individual is closely monitored for side effects while taking these drugs.

Endoscopic procedures
If you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 30 and 35 and have difficulty losing weight with lifestyle measures alone, you may be a candidate for endoscopic procedures such as intragastric balloon or endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty.

With this procedure, a silicone balloon filled with saline is placed in the stomach, which helps to lose weight by limiting how much you can eat. You also feel faster, fuller faster. The balloon can be left for up to a year if you tolerate it and can usually help you lose 10-15 kg in weight. This is a non-surgical method to achieve weight loss.
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a procedure whereby the stomach is internally endoscopically attached. This reduces the size of the stomach and helps you lose weight by limiting how much you can eat.

Bariatric surgery
If your BMI is more than 38 or more than 33 with weight-related medical issues such as diabetes or hypertension, you should consider bariatric surgery. Aside from weight, it also helps in treating various other obesity-related health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, liver fat, asthma, sleep apnea, arthritis, infertility, and PCOD. Bariatric surgery is the most effective, proven, long-term method of achieving substantial weight reduction and improving associated health problems.

Whatever the journey of weight loss, long-term sustainable change can only be achieved if lifelong changes are made by taking healthy diet and lifestyle measures.
